With a fantastic view over the Thames this is a great place to go for a simple and cheap bite to eat. Not sure if there is any associaiton to Canteen, on the other side of the building, but the food is indeed equally good albeit served in styrofoam cups proper canteen style over the cafeteria counter.
Food is seasonal and delicious. Menu is not very extensive, but depending on time of year you find sandwiches, home made stews and soups served with some of the best bread I have found around Waterloo. Of course they also serve really decent coffee.
Since it is located on the sedcond floor of the Royal Festival Hall it is quite a buzzy and lively area, so sitting here with a good book, enjoying the view over the outside terrace and the people walking past is a nice way to spend your lunch. They also have bar stools and a counter on the terrace overlooking the river. Well recommended on a sunny day.
One of the favorite lunch places of Jay and Mikael at Livebookings.
Suggested by Chris, thank you very much!

This place is superb, if you want a top stew for lunch. I have been there three times, twice having beef stew and one time lamb. Both delicious and great value for money. On a sunny day you can sit on the terrace and look across the river – stunning!

The stew is indeed excellent and I find the cafeteria approach very relaxing for some reason. Not sure I would give it a five star rating though…

The stew on a cold winters day is indeed very good. I’ve had Russian lessons while eating that stew and looking out over a grey Thames, really gets you in the philosophical mood!

Love the soup and bread. Great veggie options, usually the soup is pretty substantial (more of a broth or stew) and the bread tasty. Fill up on Simnel cake if you’re peckish.
